The Hope Top Hack
From Dress to Desk: The Hope Top Hack You’ll Want to Sew ASAP
Hey sewing babes!
Let’s talk about getting the most out of your patterns—and turning your fave dress into a wear-everywhere top. Meet the Hope Top, my latest pattern hack that takes all the drama of the original Hope Dress (yes, those sleeves!) and makes it perfect for a more casual, everyday vibe.
Why I Hacked It
I designed the Hope Dress to be a total head-turner, but I wanted a version I could wear more often something still fab but a little more functional. The result? A bold, fitted top that works for the office, dinner, or a creative day out. And yes, it still brings the drama in the best way.
Hack Details
- I shortened the bodice to create a cropped top that hits just below the waist.
- I skipped the lining to keep it lightweight and quicker to sew.
- I finished the neckline and sleeves with self-made bias strips—a clean, elegant alternative that still looks polished inside.
-
And for fabric? I went with a vibrant blue scuba knit. It gives great structure, holds the sleeve volume beautifully, and makes the whole look feel sleek and modern.
One thing to note:
Because of those fabulous puff sleeves, this top isn’t ideal for layering under jacketsbut honestly, it’s such a statement on its own, it doesn’t need anything else. Just pair it with your fave high-waisted pants or a fitted skirt and you’re good to go.
I shared the look on Instagram —and let’s just say, I’m obsessed. It’s giving “creative boss energy” in the best way.
If you’re looking to extend the life of your patterns or try your first simple hack, this is such a fun project. I’d love to see your take—use #HopeTopHack and tag me so I can celebrate your gorgeous makes!
Until next time—stay stylish and keep stitching,
—Nadia
